RISD Museum of Art acquires sculpture by Tony Marsh

Providence, RI

We are pleased to announce that the RISD Museum of Art has acquired Untitled by Tony Marsh for its permanent collection. The piece belongs to Marsh’s groundbreaking Perforated Vessel series, in which he transforms traditional ceramic vessels through thousands of meticulously drilled openings. By removing material, Marsh creates a delicate interplay of light, shadow, and space, creating forms that feel simultaneously fragile and monumental.

Developed in the 1990s, these vessels challenged conventional ideas of function and containment, redefining the sculptural and conceptual possibilities of contemporary ceramics. His early studies, including time in Japan under master potters, informed both his technical mastery and his philosophical approach to form.
